Descended from a long line of grape growers, the Lucas brothers came to Santa Barbara County and planted their first vineyard in the Santa Maria valley in 1970. Building a reputation as a grower of the finest quality wine grapes, Louis Lucas provided his grapes to many of California's finest wineries. In 1996, Judge Royce Lewellen joined forces to form Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards, a venture that continues to grow and sell grapes of the highest quality. Utilizing both traditional and the most modern of methods, Lucas & Lewellen bend every effort to produce the healthy vines that are essential to the production of premium wine grapes. To provide maximum leaf exposure to the sun, vines are trellised using the Geneva double curtain and other trellising systems to spread the vine canopy. Hedging vines and removing leaves by hand help the vines produce balanced and healthier crops. Attention to the nutritional needs of the vines means that each vine can continue to feed its grape clusters while the fruit hangs to ultimate ripeness. Finally, harvesting only by hand provides the cleanest select fruit for the winemaker's creative skill. Some of the award-winning Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards wines include a first place at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition for the “Most Unique Label-Series” for the “Queen of Hearts”; various honors for the 2001 Virgin Sauvignon Blanc, 2001 Chardonnay, 2001 Pinot Noir, 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2001 Merlot, 2001 Goodchild Chardonnay, 2003 Rose of Cabernet Franc, 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon “Valley View Vineyard”, 2000 Merlot, 2001 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir, 2002 Mandolina Pinot Grigio, 2001 Mandolina Moscato, 2001 Mandolina Barbera, and 2001 Mandolina Dolcetto.
