For over 300 years fine wines have been produced in the Cape at the southernmost tip of Africa and Warwick Estate proudly continues this tradition. Named ‘Warwick’ by Colonel Gordon after his Warwickshire regiment in the Anglo-Boer War, this Estate is situated in Stellenbosch in the heart of the fertile Muldersvlei bowl, and has been prime farmland since the 18th century. The other 'Lady of Warwick' (besides Norma, of course!) appears on the earliest label of the Cabernet Sauvignon, with its striking blue border. This golden picture shows the old-fashioned drinking vessel that stands in the centre of the Ratcliffes' dining table. Called a marriage cup or wager cup, it was used for toasting a marriage or waging a bet. We decided to treat vines individually and not use blanket recipes. This required enormous labor and management inputs. Each vine was given separate attention, giving attention to detail, to maximize potential. Harvesting alone was a huge undertaking. We sampled and picked small numbers of vines out separately. These small batches of grapes were then verified on their own. We had plenty of sun throughout the season. Our newly installed drip irrigation allowed us to "let the grapes hang", which was the motto for the season. Full, rich flavors were our reward.
